Jury rights outreach – Brentwood (1/4/16)

What a way to start out the new year!  Today BJ Mumford and I whipped through a large stack of jury nullification pamphlets as a constant stream of jurors filed into the courthouse in Brentwood, NH.

IMG_5165Jury nullification is where a jury chooses not to convict based on their conscience rather than the letter of the law, thereby nullifying a bad law or a bad application of a law. Jury rights activists pass out pamphlets to jurors informing them of their right to nullify.

This morning the temperature hovered around 20°F with a steady wind.  Gloves made handing out pamphlets at a fast pace a little difficult and as the stream of jurors intensified I had to whip them off just to keep up!  Both BJ and I were shocked at the number of people we engaged today and more than once the line to get through security in the courthouse extended well out the front door.  There was only one refusal today from potential jurors and a few defense lawyers took pamphlets as well.

In total we passed out 178 pamphlets…which is a record so far in Brentwood!  I hope today sets the tone for a stellar 2016.
