Jury rights outreach – Brentwood (1/25/16)

After a week off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, potential jurors came back to the Rockingham County Courthouse in Brentwood, NH for selection. BJ Mumford and I were also there to hand out pamphlets detailing information on jury nullification. Most of the passersby were cordial with only a few grimaces.

IMG_5330Jury nullification is where a jury chooses not to convict based on their conscience rather than the letter of the law, thereby nullifying a bad law or a bad application of a law. Jury rights activists pass out pamphlets to jurors informing them of their right to nullify.

Since this was week 3 of selection for this group and during the last outreach for this session we reached a total of 178 individuals, practically everybody passing by had already received a pamphlet. Still, another 21 people accepted a pamphlet. One individual purposefully ignored us as we engaged him and did an impressive job of not moving a muscle in his face in response to our greeting. It is intriguing to see how much effort a small percentage of people every selection will go through to ignore us. There are obviously those who know we might be there and have already made up their mind beforehand about the issues we are trying to promote. Human behavior is fascinating!

So in total we reached 21 individuals and reminded probably another 100 about the topic of jury nullification! Hope you can join us next time, check out the calendar on the site for more information!
