Jury Rights Outreach – Brentwood (9/12/16)

Today was the first round of jury selection for the fall season at the Rockingham County Court in Brentwood, NH.  After a 6 week break, BJ Mumford and Emmy Andersen were eager to get back to work handing out jury nullification information (and pocket constitutions).

Jury nullification is where a jury decides not to convict a defendant because applying the law in that case would yield an unjust result. Activists inform jurors of their right to nullify bad laws by distributing informative pamphlets.

With a temperature in the upper 40’s, there was a definite feeling of the fall season in the crisp morning air at 8:00am. A courthouse Bailiff approached our activists a few minutes after their arrival to request that they stand to the side of the main entrance to which they acquiesced, by assuming their normal places on the walkway within arms reach of potential jurors passing by. BJ and Emmy had an overwhelmingly positive response from all but a few jurors, 3 of who refused to take a pamphlet, and 1 who returned a pamphlet after briefly reading the inside cover.  In total we handed out 118 pamphlets.

This selection group will be reporting again next Monday at 10AM so come join us at 9:30 in front of the courthouse if you are interested.  Hope to see you there or at future outreach events!
